Off-Road Jeep Park to be Built on Site of Old Toledo Assembly

Wow - this could be something very exciting! According to the Toledo Blade, there are talks to build an off-road park on the site of the now-demolished Toledo Assembly plant:

In January, The Blade delivered an idea that has occurred to a number of Toledoans and to Chrysler's Jeep brand president, Michael Manley.

The idea was to mark the Wrangler milestone by building a four-wheel-drive "playground" on the now-vacant 70-acre site of Chrysler's former Toledo Jeep Assembly Plant on Jeep Parkway in West Toledo.

The site, adjacent to I-75, still boasts the smokestack from the former Overland Company, along with more than enough land to create giant hills, mud bogs, and log and rock obstacles to demonstrate the Jeep's legendary ability.

To Toledo Mayor Mike Bell and other economic development officials, the site's rich history and the anniversary provide a direct opportunity to bring thousands of Jeep enthusiasts to the city this summer for relatively little cost.

"What we need to do is sit down and figure out how we make this event extremely significant to celebrate a product that's so important to the city of Toledo, and do it in a way that doesn't cost the taxpayers any money," Mr. Bell said.

Bruce Baumhower, president of United Auto Workers Local 12, whose members have assembled the vehicles in Toledo for several different automakers since the Jeep's birth, presented the idea to the membership and executive board last week.

"They loved it," Mr. Baumhower said. "Many of them have already stepped up to volunteer for a planning committee to make it happen."

Chrysler recently launched all-new merchandising sites for their various product lines, including Jeep Gear. In their announcement of the online stores, Chrysler says:

For Jeep, the “I Live. I Ride. I Am. Jeep”, tagline now also applies to “I wear.” A sampling of what you can find at Jeep Gear includes trail headlamps, UV-filtering sunglasses, a Swiss Army rescue tool and tons of other must-haves for off-roaders. Performance fleece and water-resistant jackets and vests are there for the adventurers. And for their traveling pets, the site features collapsible bowls, matching leashes/collars and other accessories. Completing the site are a collection of military-inspired t-shirts, as well as a collection of go-anywhere t-shirts from American Apparel.

If you're into Jeep-branded wine stoppers or USB Flash Drives, then you should definitely check it out.

Four Wheeler Magazine Names Wrangler Rubicon Best 4x4 Vehicle of the Decade

Four Wheeler magazine editors have named the Jeep® Wrangler Rubicon and Wrangler Unlimited Rubicon the Best 4x4 Vehicle of the Decade, while calling out the four-door Wrangler Unlimited Rubicon as the decade's most significant 4x4 vehicle.

"Jeep vehicles have earned many awards in the almost 70-year history of the iconic brand, but few have been as prestigious as these accolades from the editors at Four Wheeler magazine," said Mike Manley, President and CEO - Jeep Brand, Chrysler Group LLC. "Jeep Wrangler Rubicon is clearly the most capable production vehicle on the planet, and in four-door Unlimited form, families can enjoy the combination of capability, freedom, space and comfort that only Jeep can provide."

In recognizing the 2007-present Jeep Wrangler and Wrangler Unlimited Rubicon as the Best 4x4 of the Decade, Four Wheeler magazine editor Doug McColloch said, "The JK (current version) Wrangler represented a big step up in on-road ride and handling for Jeep's flagship ride, yet it's off-road capability wasn't compromised in the least. If anything, it was only enhanced. Considering how competent in the dirt the previous-gen(eration) TJ was, that was no small feat for Chrysler engineers to pull off. But somehow they managed to do it, creating the decade's best four-wheel drive in the process."

In calling the 2007-present Jeep Wrangler Unlimited Rubicon the Most Significant SUV of the Decade, editor Sean Holman said, "(The decision to produce a four-door Wrangler) will probably go down in history as one of the smartest product moves any automotive company has ever made. From a Jeep customer perspective, the four-door was pure genius, opening up the sport of 'Jeeping' to families. No longer would you have to choose your kids or your gear. It also made the Jeep brand accessible to people who have always loved the idea of a Wrangler, but never thought the vehicles were large enough or functional enough to fit their lifestyle and/or needs."

Enterprising kids go all Jeep techno

If your Jeep Cherokee has been sitting around for a while, it probably makes a few noises. You might not mind, though, if they were noises as well orchestrated as those in the video shown above.

British saxophonist Julian Smith spent a few hours with a Cherokee and an array of friends with rhythm and came up with a number that could be straight out of Stomp.

The Jeep Cherokee (XJ) is a unibody (monocoque) compact SUV. It shared the name of the original full-size SJ model, but without a body-on-frame chassis, it actually set the stage for the modern SUV. Its innovative appearance and sales popularity spawned important imitators as other automakers began to notice that this model began replacing regular cars.[1] It was built in Toledo, Ohio in the United States and in Beijing, China. The XJ platform provided the mechanical basis for the MJ-series Jeep Comanche pick-up.

The XJ was selected by Robert Cumberford of Automobile Magazine as one of the 20 greatest cars of all time, calling it "possibly the best SUV shape of all time, it is the paradigmatic model to which other designers have since aspired."

The Wrangler is Cool (No Kidding)

Here's a shocker for you - the Wrangler is a cool summer vehicle. At least that's what AutoWeek thinks when it named it one of the 10 coolest vehicles of the summer. I'm pretty sure there was no quantitative analysis of what makes a vehicle "cool" - probably just a nice way to sell some magazines (preaching to the choir). Regardless, it's always nice to get some confirmation.

Chrysler thought the announcement was cool enough to warrant putting it in this week's edition of "Under the Pentastar".
